Lissewege - A picturesque village with whitewashed houses & cobbled streets surrounded by open countryside and a canal. The Church of Our Lady an early-gothic brickstone church C13 is the focal point. A service was in progress so we could not enter to see the interiors which contain "fine furnishings (organ-case, pulpit and roodloft dd. 1562 by Walram Romboudt, paintings by J. Van Oost, M. Van Duvenede en J. Maes, miraculous Madonna-statue (1625)".

The tower is accessible during the summer months only, 166 feet high with lovely views. It is flat on top as originally used as a 'lighthouse' with fires lit at night to guide the ships between Bruges & Zeebrugge.

Ter Doest a former Cistercian abbey C12 of which a massive C13 gothic barn still exists. Some unusual sculptures are placed in the grounds. [Near Lissewege]

The Cathedral contains some lovely tapestries which were woven in Brussels in 1730 & also possesses the original paintings that were used as models for the tapestries. The Bishop's Chair [Cathedra] from St Donatian's Cathedral 1598 & lovely stained glass windows.

Walking along Steenstraat, past Simon Stevin Plein [Place] to the Market Place, a pedestrianised square in the centre of Bruges where one finds the Provincial Government Palace/Provincial Court neo-gothic building, main Post Office, Cloth Hall & Belfry and statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck [leaders of the 'Battle of the Golden Spurs' 1302] amongst other 'medieval style' buildings.

Burg [Square] is the home of Bruges Town Hall dating back to 1376, the Old Recorders House, former Court of Justice now the Tourist Information centre and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, comprising 2 chapels St Basil [Lower] & Holy Blood [Upper].
